Fall Custom Wedding Jewelry: The Story of my First Client

I was thinking back to the start of Fifth Essence Jewelry as a business the other week and it got me thinking about those who encouraged me in my early years. Of everyone, my family members were the early supporters of my work unconditionally. Whether it was my grandma encouraging me by buying my jewelry, to trusting me to design custom jewelry for them, my family is amazing. This is the story of one of the first weddings I designed jewelry for.

How I got started creating custom wedding jewelry

Back in September 2028, one of my cousins was getting married. She was planning her beautiful wedding that was scheduled for late September. Her wedding theme was fall (because she was getting married in New Hampshire at the height of New England’s fall color season) so she was incorporating several fall-themed elements into her wedding. One of these items were these beautiful copper plated leaf pendants for her bridesmaids. As she was describing them to me she was saying she didn’t even know what she would do with them, or when she would even have time to create something for her bridesmaids.

I told her to mail the leaf pendants to me and I would create her something beautiful. This was long before Fifth Essence Jewelry existed as a business, back when making jewelry was just a hobby of mine. She agreed, and looking back I realize that this is where my custom wedding jewelry service officially began. And truly, this is where Fifth Essence Jewelry began as well.

As already said, the theme was fall with the bridesmaids dresses in an espresso brown color, and the junior bridesmaids dresses were a cranberry red. Knowing this I wanted something that would match these two colors and weave in other colors you would find during the fall I went to my local bead shop (this was before I had the stash that I do now) and opted for red tigereye, smoky quartz, brown tigereye, and glass beads in fall-hues. Because the pendant leaves were copper, I also decided I would work with copper wire and accents to tie everything together.

The end result were beautiful necklaces that matched the theme, worked with the dress necklines, and were the perfect accent element for the wedding party. But I didn’t stop there; I also created a necklace for the mother of the bride (my aunt), something for my grandmother attending the wedding, and one for Tracy as well so she could wear a matching necklace to remember her wedding day after the fact.

This wedding was so special to me. It was the first time I had the chance to design jewelry for someone and add to the experience in a meaningful way. It was also the first time I had the chance to hear what a bride wanted and bring it to life. It was also the first time that I designed jewelry around a season, something I continue to do even presently.

I heard so many compliments from those who received their custom wedding jewelry, and the guests that attended the wedding. It was this positive feedback that was ultimately one of the main reasons I decided to make Fifth Essence Jewelry an official business. So many people enjoyed my jewelry so much, I knew there was a market for the handmade jewelry I create.
